Baltimore Medical System (BMS), the largest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) system in Maryland, announces its newest community health center, BMS at Yard 56, will be open to patients beginning May 22, 2023. BMS leadership, staff, supporters and local officials commemorated the opening of the new facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 4, 2023.

Located at 5525 Eastern Avenue, BMS at Yard 56 is located within t new urban mixed-use development adjacent to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC), with whom BMS has had a long-time collaboration. The new community health center features 54 care rooms and will serve as an integrated Patient-Centered Medical Home to approximately 20,000 new patients in East Baltimore in need of access to high-quality medical care.

BMS at Yard 56 will also be the first BMS community health center to feature dental care, offering general diagnostic and preventative dental services for children and adults. BMS received funding from the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission (CHRC) to add dental care to its range of community health services.

In addition to dental care, other specialties offered at the new location will include:

  • Family medicine
  • Internal medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN)
  • Behavioral health
  • A 340B pharmacy (opening Summer 2023)

The new center’s proximity to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center will provide enhanced collaboration between the two health organizations. Patients from JHBMC’s Children’s Medical Practice and OB/GYN clinics will transition to receive clinical care at BMS at Yard 56 beginning May 22.

The construction of BMS at Yard 56 was led by Baltimore-based developer David Bramble and MCB Real Estate. Funding for the new community health center has been supported by several significant grants from the Maryland Department of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration, the France-Merrick Foundation, and the Middendorf Foundation.

“We have been eagerly anticipating the opening of our newest community health center at Yard 56 for several years now, and we are excited to now officially open our doors to patients,” said Shirley Sutton, president and CEO, Baltimore Medical System. “It is vital for every neighborhood to have convenient access to high-quality, affordable health care, and City residents who live in the area surrounding JHBMC now have a modern medical home, near their home, designed to meet all their primary and specialty health care needs, including dental care. We are extremely grateful to the MCB Real Estate team, and our generous funders, who have brought this vision to life.”

BMS at Yard 56 is also the new headquarters for BMS’s administrative offices, including executive leadership, marketing and development.
