What Parents Told Us: Insights from Our Maternal Health & Wellness Focus Groups

At Baltimore Medical System, we believe the best way to improve care is by listening directly to the people we serve. That’s why we recently hosted a series of focus groups with parents who participated in programs like Circle of Security, Mom’s Club, B’more Fit, and our Breastfeeding Support Group. We wanted to know: What worked? What didn’t? And what can we do better?

Here’s what we learned—and how it’s shaping the future of family wellness at BMS.

Parents Found Support— and Transformation

Across all groups, participants reported that our programs were life-changing. From feeling more connected to their children to feeling seen in a community of peers, parents told us that these services didn’t just offer information—they offered emotional healing and hope.

Circle of Security

Parents in this parenting support program said it helped them see their children’s behavior through a new lens:

It changed how I see my child’s behavior — now I understand he’s not ‘bad,’ he’s asking for something.

Mom’s Club

Described as “lifesaving,” the Mom’s Club helped parents cope with postpartum stress and isolation. Many shared that the friendships they formed became their greatest source of support.

“I don’t know where I’d be without these women.”

B’more Fit

This program went beyond fitness—it boosted confidence, improved mental health, and created a sense of belonging.

It’s not just about losing weight. It’s about feeling good in your skin.

Breastfeeding Support

Parents came in motivated and eager to breast/chest feed but struggled due to stigma, misinformation, and lack of support.

What made the difference was other moms telling me it’s normal to struggle.

How We’re Responding at BMS

We’re using this valuable feedback to evolve our services. Here’s what we’re working on:

  • Expanding outreach through OB-GYNs, pediatricians, WIC, and social media

  • Launching peer-led alumni groups to maintain support after programs end

  • Offering hybrid and virtual sessions to reduce access barriers

  • Increasing cultural representation among facilitators and materials

  • Piloting integrated care hubs that offer parenting, lactation, and mental health support in one place

Thank You for Sharing Your Voice

To every parent who joined a focus group—thank you. Your honesty, vulnerability, and ideas are shaping the future of care at BMS. We’re committed to removing barriers, expanding support, and making sure every parent feels empowered and welcomed.

If you’re a parent looking for community, support, or resources—we see you. And we’re here to help.
