Highlandtown is now an official Reach Out & Read® site—bringing books, connection, and brighter beginnings to the children and families we serve.
At Highlandtown, a well-child visit can now send a child home with something powerful: a book of their very own.
In July, Baltimore Medical System's Highlandtown Center was officially approved as a Reach Out & Read® site. The milestone strengthens a tradition already rooted in the center—making books and reading part of a child's earliest care experiences.
Every book is an invitation to imagine, learn, and grow—one page at a time.
More than a book
Even before becoming an official Reach Out & Read site, Highlandtown's pediatric team gave children age-appropriate books at well-child visits from birth through age 5. Providers encouraged families to read together, knowing that these small, steady moments help build language, confidence, connection, and a lifelong love of learning.
Now, that work can reach even further. Books are supported through grant funding from the National Reach Out & Read program, matching funds from BMS's Development Office, and access to books through the Maryland Book Bank.
A place where reading belongs
The commitment does not stop in the exam room. Throughout Highlandtown, books, reading materials, and welcoming displays make literacy a visible and joyful part of the clinic experience. A special thank you to Jasmine Brown, who maintains this literacy-rich environment and helps keep it engaging for every child and family who visits.
