Centering Groups Recognized as a Model of Excellence

Centering groups recognized as a model of excellence ahead of full certification

Baltimore Medical System (BMS) is proud to announce that our Yard 56 center has officially achieved Centering Accreditation from the Centering Healthcare Institute (CHI). This milestone recognizes our commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care through CenteringPregnancy and CenteringParenting programs.

What is Centering?

Centering is a nationally recognized model of group care that brings patients out of the exam room and into a supportive circle of care. In these sessions, families not only receive health assessments but also build connections, share experiences, and learn from one another. The model has been proven to improve health outcomes, reduce stress, and strengthen community bonds.

Why Centering Matters

Centering is proven to improve outcomes. Studies have shown that CenteringPregnancy can lead to:

  • Higher rates of full-term births

  • Lower rates of low birthweight

  • Increased breastfeeding initiation

  • Greater patient engagement and satisfaction

But beyond the data, Centering provides what so many patients say they’ve been missing: connection.

Mary from CHI captured this beautifully when she shared:

What the Accreditation Means

Earning CHI Accreditation means our Yard 56 center demonstrated full adherence to the nine essential elements of Centering—from interactive group facilitation and patient self-assessments to consistent evaluation and strong leadership support.

Highlights from our site visit included:

  • A welcoming space – Spacious, bright, and beautifully decorated, with room for families, partners, and even strollers.

  • Engaging sessions – Interactive discussions that empower patients, with topics like home safety, vaccines, labor preparation, and hospital tours.

  • Outstanding facilitation – Providers and staff guiding conversations while fostering trust, connection, and shared learning.

  • Positive patient feedback – Families described the experience as “a blessing” and “a huge emotional support—you never feel alone in Centering.”

Why It Matters for Baltimore Families

This accreditation isn’t just a certificate—it’s a reflection of our mission. Centering strengthens the care we provide by:

  • Helping parents feel empowered in their health decisions.

  • Building supportive communities where families thrive together.

  • Improving health outcomes for both parents and children

Looking Ahead

At BMS, we believe healthcare is strongest when it’s personal, compassionate, and community-driven. Our Yard 56 team’s achievement is a step forward in ensuring families across Baltimore have access to care that heals both body and spirit.

We look forward to growing our Centering programs and continuing to create spaces where families feel seen, supported, and empowered.
